We have discussed in past articles the importance of relying on server-side rendering of your site to improve SEO and improve organic search performance. Largely we found that sites that load directly from the server, Search Engines (such as Google & Bing) have a much easier time processing the content on the page.

There are fewer steps and therefore better SEO results.

Which is why we are going to deep dive and teach you how to check server side rendering.

We will use this article to discuss methods you can use to test how search bots interpret your website and therefore help improve your organic search results.

Real quick, if you are struggling to debug pesky technical SEO issues, server side rendering, client side rendering, etc.

Give us a shout, we do this all day everyday and are happy to chat with about your project.

Test How Your Website Loads

We are going to walk through the examples laid out in this video to get a better understanding of how we manually test for SEO performance.

Method 1: View Source

This method can be used to give you an idea of which parts of your website are being rendered server-side or client-side.

Generally speaking, it’s a quick and dirty way to figure it out.

How To Do It

For best results, you want to ensure that you are using Google Chrome, or any of its derivatives (Ex. Brave), as your browser for the developer tools it offers within itself.

To begin, travel to any site of your choosing. Then,

Right click anywhere on the site and select “View Source” (Some websites disable this functionality, so you may want to try another)

This will redirect you to the site’s full HTML document where all items inside are considered to be server-side rendered

You can then filter through the code and HTML tags to get a better understanding of is being rendered server-side and what is not

This method can directly be used to interpret how certain parts of your website are interacting with the browser and can give a better understanding of why certain behaviors are being exhibited on your browser.

Method 2: Check Google Directly

This method will visually display how Google interprets the website of your choosing when it attempts to place it within search results. You will get to see a cached, or previously stored, version of the HTML sent from the server to Google for placing within search results.

How To Do It

To use this method:

Having your desired site in mind, start a session on the Google search engine main page

Enter the site’s full URL in the search box without pressing ENTER or searching for results

Now, type “site:” before the URL and proceed with searching for results
(Example search: “site:https://www.airbnb.com”)

If your site has been indexed by Google you should see it as an available option for you to select.

Proceed by clicking the 3 dots beside the title of your selection

A Popup should appear then select the option for “Cache” near the bottom

You now get to view how Google initially loads your website for SEO.

You may notice it is visually different than normal, which may be worth investigating using Method 1 (using page source to do server-side troubleshooting)

Method 3: Change Useragent in Chrome

This method allows you to change the device loading any website directly within Google Chrome to gain an understanding of how systems like smartphones, different browsers, etc. process and load content on your site.

We can even load it with Googlebot Desktop & Smartphone (which we’ll be focusing on for this tutorial.)

How To Do It

Travel to your desired website, and right-click within the site contents

Proceed by selecting “Inspect”, sometimes denoted as “Inspect Element”

This will reveal a Popup with multiple tabs for you to explore the components and interactions of your site behind the scenes

For this exercise, we are focusing on utilizing the “Networks” tab, so you can ignore the rest and select that from the options at the top of the popup

Within the “Network” tab window, another tab selection will reveal itself directly under

Proceed by selecting the button (normally used to denote Wifi signals)

This will change the options available at the bottom of the window

Proceed by finding the “User agent” section within the bottom window and uncheck the “use browser default” box

This then gives you the option to change the software being used to load the site.

Once you play around with the devices, you can troubleshoot any issues you may have using method 1 to get a better understanding of what is being sent to the browser.

Switch between the different GoogleBot Options. Both Smartphone & desktop.

Final Thoughts

These 3 methods, when used together, allow for a full analysis of Javascript SEO, frameworks that load in the DOM and empower us to investigate any site and its competitors for an understanding of how to move forward with getting a site ranked higher and allowing your users to enjoy a fast and seamless experience.

The main advantage with using our methodology is that you will be able to pinpoint how Googlebot (or even BingBot, etc) will interpret your website.

If you understand how search engines view your website, you’ll be able to make better judgments on how to approach your website’s technology.

Research Highlight: In 2025, Node.js powers over 30 million websites globally, with a market share of 4.5%, up from 3.1% the previous year.

Node.js Usage in 2025 – Highlights

Global Adoption:

Websites Powered: Over 30 million websites utilize Node.js.

Market Share: 4.5% of all websites use Node.js as their web server.

Monthly Downloads: Approximately 130 million downloads per month, indicating a 40% year-over-year growth.

Developer Preferences:

Developer Usage: Node.js is used by 36.42% of professional developers for modern application development.

Continued Use: Approximately 19,793 developers have worked with Node.js and wish to continue using it.

Performance & Efficiency:

Loading Time Reduction: Node.js can reduce loading times by 50–60%.

Development Cost Savings: Companies have reported up to a 57% reduction in development costs after adopting Node.js.

Enterprise Adoption:

How did we do it?

Here is the general approach:

Cora Optimization

I frequently use Cora, an enterprise-level SEO tool, for on-page optimization because it excels at measuring virtually any SEO metric and provides actionable insights to identify gaps and opportunities for effective optimization.

The website already had a significant number of backlinks, providing a strong foundation for SEO.

The primary landing page was poorly optimized for SEO entities, limiting its potential to rank well.

Identified key entities and topics that competitors had effectively optimized for.

Filled the topical gaps by creating relevant and comprehensive content to match and surpass competitor standards.

This strategy improved the website’s relevance to search engines, leading to better rankings and increased visibility.

Technical Optimization + Clean Up

The primary landing page, built with Next.js, had a handful of minor rendering issues—a common challenge with React-based frameworks.

The WordPress installation was misconfigured, leading to conflicts that negatively impacted SEO performance.

The WordPress subfolder hosted numerous blog posts with low-quality content or topics that were poorly covered, diluting its overall topical relevance.

Cleaning up the WordPress installation and addressing these issues became a critical part of the optimization process.

In this article we will discuss how to Simulate Googlebot. We’ll review two similar methods to analyze any site’s performance and search engine optimization with respect to how Google interprets your site specifically. Although, these methods also have the options to render with more options. We just recommend Google since they are widely used and have extremely advanced crawlers.

We also cover extra methods in this article where we check serverside rendering.

What are the advantages of Simulating and Viewing as googlebot?

Simulating through GoogleBot allows anybody with the right experience the opportunity to solve SEO problems much easier, and for newcomers, allows them to see how GoogleBot interacts with the sites it crawls.

Another benefit is having concrete evidence or data to use as a tool for when you make important decisions to change crucial parts of applications. This makes it easier to have a team of developers, clients, etc. to be convinced of the root cause of a search engine optimization problem and fix it.

Lots of times it is extremely hard to explain or find evidence for common SEO issues just because Google and Bing for example, when crawling Javascript are a bit of a black box when they crawl these types of sites.

Meaning, with Javascript, compared to standard HTML websites (ie websites that render from the server) they are a bit hard to interpret and diagnose for SEO roadblocks

However, using the methods we will show in this article, you’ll learn whot to simulate googlebot and diagnose these types of websites for SEO issues.

GoogleBot Simulating & Rendering Tutorial

Method 1: Fetch With Chrome

This method allows you to change the device loading any website directly within Google Chrome to gain an understanding of how systems like smartphones, different browsers, etc. process and load content on your site.

We will specifically be using the GoogleBot options which also include a smart phone option, which is widely used across all cellular devices.

How Fetch As Googlebot

What are the advantages of this method?

Everytime you click on a link to make another request to the site you can see exactly how GoogleBot is interacting and loading the website. This should give you an idea of what components are being rendered on the client and server side so that further decision making can be done.

Method #2 Use Screaming Frog to Crawl as GoogleBot

This method is essentially the same as the first, but we are given an interface which shows us the actual data being processed within the GoogleBot in the table with the page results from the site.

Screaming Frog is a website crawler that extracts data and audits for common SEO issues. It is rather simple to use, but maybe a bit harder to interpret.

You can start by entering your website of choice within the upmost “URL” TextBox, and you will be welcomed with a list of page results from your website along with other attributes as the web crawler does its thing.

You even have the ability to change the User-Agent by:

Selecting “Configuration” at the top of the toolbar

Then selecting, “User-Agent”

And proceeding by changing the user agent in the popup window

You can play around with this a bit more to get an understanding of the app.

What are the advantages of this method?

This method allows you to take a look at certain attributes of the pages within your site to further help the decision making process for implementing changes to an application. For example, you can take a look at the order of how the application loaded the pages of your website and interpret that the ones at the top were more accessible for some reason than the ones at the bottom and do some more digging from there.

Final Thoughts

Talk about the advantage of Crawling with Googlebot. Mainly, see you get to visually experience exactly how Google gets to make a request and load any website on the internet and gain a further understanding of the true depth of what search engine optimization really is.
